Pets 101

72 hours of bringing your new puppy home, take him or her to your veterinarian for a well-pet visit. Even if your puppy doesn’t have any vaccinations due it’s important for your vet to give him or her a comprehensive medical exam right away. Your vet will listen to your new puppy’s heart and lungs, palpate his or hers tummy, look for abnormalities in the eyes and inspect your puppy’s teeth and gums.

Your vet will also want you to bring in a stool sample to check for worms. Many puppies, regardless of breeder, are born with worms even if your puppy’s mother didn’t show any signs of worms. When a female dog becomes pregnant, hormones cause the dormant worm larvae to migrate into the puppies and the milk supply.

Small dogs can have dental problems and can lose a good number of teeth in their lifetime. Even worse, the buildup of bacteria in a dog’s mouth can lead to kidney, liver, and heart problems. This is why it is extremely important to take excellent care of your dog’s teeth. The best thing you can do is brush your dog’s teeth daily. If you can’t manage brushing that often, promise your dog you’ll brush at least twice a week. Puppy World Boutique and Spa can supply you with a tooth brush and toothpaste formulated just for dogs.

Make sure you stay on top of your dog’s vaccinations. Make sure to use a flea and tick prevention (available at Puppy World Boutique and Spa) as well as heart worm prevention.

Puppy World Boutique and Spa recommends that you give your dog filtered water, it is a lot better for their digestive system than regular tap water.

Grooming plays another big factor in taking care of your dog. Keeping the ears clean, clipping the nails, brushing the teeth and managing the hair is all very important.
